DOP – Ashley Iris Gill

Ashley Iris Gill

Cinematographer | Narrative & Documentary

Ashley came to cinematography from a love of photography and writing – she wanted a medium that could bridge “what people were reading and what I envisioned them to kind of see.” Initially drawn to directing, she pivoted behind the camera after facing resistance on set:

“I got frustrated with male shooters not wanting to listen to me as a female director… it was kind of a ‘f.u.’ moment for me to become a cinematographer.”

Visual Style:

Ashley’s work is defined by its organic warmth and intuitive handheld energy. Her signature is a calm, controlled movement that still feels alive:

“I shoot a lot of handheld but it doesn’t feel too chaotic… even if I’m just standing there handheld, it looks pretty.”

She favours setups that let her react quickly to the moment – building her kit around run‑and‑gun flexibility.

Preferred Camera Package:

This is the “fair budget” kit Ashley would choose – swap K35’s for Canon FD’s to save, and you’ve still got the same look.

  • Camera: ARRI Alexa 35
“The Alexa 35 has great dynamic range… it’s like an all‑around amazing camera.”
  • Lenses:
    • Primary: Canon K35 Primes
    • Backup (budget): Canon FD Primes

  • Filters & Matte:
    • 703 Bright
    • Rota Pola
    • Classic Soft (1/8, 1/4)
    • ND Set
  • Support:
    • Vario 5 EasyRig
    • Sticks (Tripod)
    • Dana Dolly
  • Never Leave Home Without:
    • iPad: “I use my iPad for planning lighting plans, call sheets, notes… or if I’m really stressed I could just doodle something.”
    • Kit Kats: “If you’ve been on set with me, you already know this… it’s like my favourite chocolate.”

“Everything here is chosen so I can run out with the camera, pull focus off the barrel, and keep moving.”

The One Thing She Always Forgets:

“Honestly, maybe a Rota Pola – I use it so often I assume it comes with the camera.”
